St. Louis Rams rookie Tavon Austin is one of the fastest players in the league, so when he’s on the outside and looking to break free, you as a defender have one job. Stop him. Slow him down. Anything you can do to prevent him from getting into open space, you must do it.

That was the thought of Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Kyle Wilber who was focused on Austin as he motored down the sideline. Unfortunately for Wilber, he appeared a bit too focused on Austin as St. Louis Rams free safety T.J. McDonald absolutely leveled Wilber as he came across the field in attempts to tackle Austin.

Watching Wilber’s body jerk as he was hit just makes you wince at the thought.

And yes, for those who are wondering, the play was flagged. I’m not sure that helped ease the pain of Wilber though, who needed a few moments to gather himself, which was completely understandable.

We’re still relatively early, but that one might take the award for block of the day, even though it was illegal.
