Sometimes, one play makes all the difference.

Packers kick returner/wide receiver Jeremy Ross muffed a punt during Sunday’s 34-30 roller-coaster loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, and that error led to a big touchdown for the Bengals. Then, on Monday…

It is probably too simple to say that Ross’s blunder on Sunday cost him his job (he also had a similar misplay during last year’s playoffs), but it certainly didn’t help.

In 2012, Ross appeared in the final 5 games for Green Bay, and he returned a total of 7 kicks (3 kickoffs, 4 punts) for 189 yards. That type of average would place him among the game’s elite, but with such a small sample, it couldn’t outweigh the errors that he made while in the role. In addition, Ross has just 1 catch in his GB career, and he couldn’t fall back on an offensive role when the special teams play slipped.

Green Bay is reeling after a devastating loss, and now, they’ll be looking for a kick returner. In a pinch, they could turn to leading receiver Randall Cobb, but more likely, the Green and Yellow will be scouring the waiver wire in search of a high impact player in the return game.
