Despite the Minnesota Vikings recently signing quarterback Josh Freeman and having backup Matt Cassel on the roster, the starting job is still that of Christian Ponder, this according to head coach Leslie Frazier.

Of course, Frazier did throw a minor roadblock into those plans, suggesting that Ponder is the starter – when healthy.

That of course gives Frazier a bit of leeway to make any decision he feels appropriate.

Per Ben Goeselling:

"Frazier says #Vikings told Freeman he would have a chance to compete for starting job. Said Ponder is still the starter if he’s healthy."

It should be noted, Frazier did say that Freeman would not be a candidate to start Week 6 and that starting duties this week will be given to either Ponder or Casell, likely depending on the health of Christian who is nursing a pretty significant rib injury.

Even prior to the signing of Freeman, Ponder’s leash on the starting job was about as short as it can get so despite the ‘vote of confidence’, it’s hard to believe Ponder will continue to get the call in the coming weeks.
