Should the Chicago Cubs trade for David Price?

Well now that David Price excepts to be traded, one team that could possibly land him are the Chicago Cubs.

But do they actually need him? It doesn’t necessarily hurt to add depth to your starting rotation, especially if you’re the Cubs. Last season the rotation started off strong, but what brought it all down was the bullpen.

This season for the Cubs, the best pitcher they had in their rotation was left handed pitcher Travis Wood. Wood finished the year 9-12 with a 3.11 ERA in 32 starts. He struck out 144 batters through 200 even innings pitched.

Not far behind was Jeff Samardzija who performed pretty well and was the only Cubs starter to break 200 strike outs but still managed to give up 25 long balls. Samardzija posted a 4.34 ERA in 33 starts.

Of course you have pitchers like Chris Rusin and Jake Arrieta looking to get a spot in the starting rotation next season but could be possible trade chips if the Cubs were to attempt to pick up Price.

Price finished the regular season with a 10-8 record and 3.33 ERA through 27 starts. In his last outing against the Boston Red Sox, he gave up nine hits and two home runs through seven innings pitched in a loss.

Chicago and Tampa are somewhat familiar after the Cubs picked up Matt Garza and Carlos Pena within the same time period. Tampa picked up Sam Fuld in the Garza trade and it’s worked out pretty well for them, so they know what the Cubs could have to offer in potential major league ready players.

If the asking price isn’t too high, I wouldn’t be surprised if the North Sider’s give Tampa a call and see what Tampa would want for him.
