New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith hasn’t had the smoothest transition to the NFL, but he has shown some flashes of brilliance early on in his career. While Smith still clearly has some work to do, he believes that he has the skill set to become one of the league’s top signal-callers.

Smith was asked if he would develop into an elite quarterback and he responded, “Yes,” before explaining why.

“Simply because of my work ethic,” he said, via the New York Post. “As far as the physical standpoint, talent, I’ve competed with every single guy out there and I know where I stand amongst that ranks. But I think my work ethic is what puts me above some other guys.

“ I just think I’m the type of guy that’s driven, that’s going to continue to work and is going to continue to get better, and that’s what this game’s all about, is constantly progressing, and I know that I can be an elite quarterback. And I don’t think it’s a matter of it happening, it’s just trying to speed up the process.”

Many of the league’s elite quarterbacks have had early struggles, so Jets fans shouldn’t be overly concerned about what they have seen in the early going.

What the should do instead is focus on the good moments they have seen, while believing in Smith’s ability to grow and put in the work to be the best quarterback that he can be. In the end, hopefully it will pay off and Smith’s prediction will be true.
