When the day opened in Texas, the Dallas Mavericks were carrying 20 players on their training camp roster. However, by the time the sun was setting, that number dwindled to 16.

The Mavs cutting Renaldo Balkman, Devin Ebanks, D.J. Kennedy and Fab Melo shouldn’t come as a surprise, as none of the 4 players were operating on guaranteed contracts, but it still moves the meter a bit. Ebanks was famously facing a suspension following a DUI arrest while with the Lakers, but it looks as if he’ll have to serve it as a member of a different organization.

As far as the other trio of players, Renaldo Balkman and Fab Melo are both NBA-caliber players with Balkman being a 6-year veteran who has seen the court in 221 career games. However, the 29-year-old swingman fell victim to a roster chalked full of solid players at his position, while Melo has failed to show the promise that made him a 2012 1st-round pick for Boston.

With the Mavs still carrying 16 players, there is a move or two yet to be made, but it looks as if they may push that decision closer to the NBA’s deadline for submitting regular season rosters. Stay tuned.
