On Saturday, two of the biggest teams in all of sports, let alone soccer, square off. El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid is one of the biggest rivalry games in all of the world. It could be the biggest rivalry in all of sports even. To compare it to American sports, it’d be up there with Red Sox-Yankees or Ohio State-Michigan.

This match up will be particularly interesting because of the superstars both clubs have added. Real Madrid acquired Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona signed Neymar from Brazil.

“Real Madrid always demand the most from you. They’re playing better and better,” Barcelona captain Carles Puyol said, via ESPN FC. “We’ll have to be at our best to beat them. We know they’re dangerous on the break. We know them very well.”

While there is a lot of pressure and attention on this match, Puyol is downplaying the significance of it.

“It won’t decide the title,” he said. “There’s a long way still to go but it is a good opportunity to play well and gain confidence.”

Barcelona’s new coach Gerardo Martino hinted that he might start Xavi or Andres Iniesta on the bench. He echoed Puyol’s comments and down played the impact this game will have on the season.

“It is an important game, but at the start of the season,” Martino said, via ESPN FC “It may have more importance for the numbers, or for the weight of winning or losing against your big rival. The numbers are easier to get back in the next games.”

At the same time though, Martino said El Clasico isn’t the same as other derbies he has been apart of.

“There are Clasicos all over the world, but it is difficult for them to generate the same expectations as a Barcelona against Madrid,” he said. “This is the first time for this type of Clasico, for what it represents, and the media around it. There is great excitement for us, as for all Barcelonismo, ahead of the game.”
