It isn’t often that we see $15,000 fines for preseason incidents in the NBA, but that’s the tab for Memphis Grizzlies forward Ed Davis.

As Kurt Helin indicates, the fine given to Davis was for “excessive and unnecessary contact” in Friday’s game against Houston, and that pretty much illustrates what happened. Davis took a bit of a wild swing in an attempt (or lack thereof) to block the shot of Motiejunas, and that netted him a flagrant 2 foul and an ejection for good measure.

Frankly, I’m a bit surprised by the amount of this fine, but apparently the NBA is taking a bit of a stand against this type of violent play. Previous to his arrival in Memphis, Davis didn’t exactly have the rep as an overly physical player, but with “gritty” guys like Tony Allen and Zach Randolph next to him, maybe he’s found his step in that regard.

Fortunately, Motiejunas wasn’t injured and that is the major takeaway here, but on the bright side for Memphis, Davis will be able to play when they open the season on Wednesday night.
