In the main event of Showtime Boxing, Adrien Broner and Marcos Maidana were set to face off for the WBA welterweight title. Broner entered the bout as one of the most exciting young fighters in the sport, but Maidana was going to present a problem because of his overwhelming power.

Would speed or power come out on top Saturday night?

When it was all said and down, it was the power and volume of Maidana that was the big difference as he earned the unanimous decision win and handed Broner the first two knockdowns of his career.

Maidana wasted no time coming out and going for the kill, as he got off to a quick start and unloaded some powerful shots to Broner, who had his back to the ropes. Maidana was capitalizing on his overhand right, as Broner looked to clinch and avoid the big shots and weather the storm.

Maidana began to work the body in to his flurries and Broner appeared to be overwhelmed with the early punishment. Broner clowned Maidana near the end of the round, as he threw in some humping motion that drew boos from the crowd.

Maidana kicked off the second round with the same aggressiveness and power as Maidana landed a powerful left that hurt Broner badly and sent him crumbling to the canvas. Maidana disguised the shot as a jab, before looping it to the outside and connecting for the knockdown. The power was taking it’s toll on Broner and Maidana was not slowing down. Broner was losing his focus and continued calling to the referee, but Maidana was not stopping and he continued to land the big shots until the closing bell of the round sounded.

Broner appeared more composed in the third round, as he looked to open up with his speed and counter the powerful shots from the challenger. Maidana, on the other hand, began to reestablish his jab.

Broner snuck in a big uppercut to start Round 5, but Maidana wasn’t backing down. Broner was beginning to find his rhythm as the fight went on, but the referee delivered a second warning to Broner for clinching and he would have to be careful moving forward to avoid losing a crucial point.

The sixth round started with Broner being the aggressor, before Maidana busted up Broner’s nose with his solid jab that continued to find a home. Maidana seemed to be focusing on attacking the body in Round 6, but he would throw in some leaping shots over the top looking to capitalize. Broner was the more accurate of the fighter, while Maidana was throwing the higher volume of punches. Maidana landed a big left hook at the end of the round, but he was unable to capitalize before the bell sounded.

Broner ate a big right cross in the opening seconds of Round 7 and he continued to land the more significant shots. It was an interesting fight to score because of the difference in volume and accuracy, which could lead to a controversial decision if the fight went the distance.

For the second time in the fight, Maidana was able to land a knockdown as he landed a big left in the eighth round. After the knockdown, Broner was hit in the jaw with a headbutt and a point was deducted which neutralized the point advantage that he had from the headbutt.

The point deduction appeared to light a fire under Maidana and he gained a second wind going in to the ninth round. Maidana landed a huge left hook that rocked Broner and Maidana began to unload as Broner looked for the clinch. Maidana had all of the momentum and was overwhelming Broner in Round 9, while Broner was struggling to find his range thanks to the Maidana jab.

Maidana was eating all of Broner’s shots and continued to march forward, while Broner continued to look hesitant. With the tenth round winding down, Maidana had thrown double the amount of punches as Broner, but he continued to look fresh inside of the ring and the crowd was clearly behind him.

Broner’s corner spent the time in between rounds trying to motivate the champion and encourage him to open up in the final two rounds and that was reflected in Round 11 as he started off being the busier fighter. After a missed punch from Broner, Maidana returned the favor and humped Broner from behind during a clinch, which got the crowd behind Maidana as he began to open up over the final minute. Broner ended Round 11 with a shot after the bell, but no points were taken.

The final round got off to a slow start after some tape came close on his glove and Maidana still appeared to be stunned from the late shot after the bell. Broner was once again warned for using his forearms in the final round, but the ref continued to refuse taking away a point. The two men were engaging in some wild exchanges, as Maidana caught Broner with a heavy left. Broner’s knees buckled after the shot, but he continued to push forward in search of the knockdown.

When the judge’s scorecards were read after the final bell, 115-110, 116-109 and 117-109 in favor of the new champion, Marcos Maidana.
