At first you might think that the radio host is mad because his girlfriend was sitting courtside at a New York Knicks game with New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey. That might make some kind of sense.

This radio host is mad at Harvey for sitting courtside at a Knicks game with his girlfriend, SI Swimsuit Model Anne V.

The radio host is Joe Benigno, blue collar sports fan from New Jersey who hosts the midday show on WFAN in New York City. He is upset that Harvey is going to miss next season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.

As if going and watching a game is going to impede his recovery. It isn’t like he is out throwing footballs in a flag football league or in Central Park. He is sitting and watching a game.

I guess Mets fan Benigno thinks Harvey should sit in a dark room for a year while he recovers doing nothing? Harvey retweeted and then deleted a fan who called out Benigno.

I actually kind of agree with Benigno. There’s something that feels a little off about Harvey’s public persona sometimes – the man has accomplished relatively little at this point. For a 2-3 month stretch he was one of the best pitchers in baseball last year – guess what, so was Dillon Gee. And you don’t see Dillon Gee flaunting his star all over the place.

I dunno – I love Harvey as much as the next Mets fan – but a little bit less public exposure (especially in bad New Orleans-style hats), a little more blue collar humility and work ethic. This is the Mets, that’s what the fans want to see, like it or not.

What was he doing? From what I saw and heard he was merely at the game w/ his GF. Was there more? If not, whats the big deal. If that’s all that happened, it’s getting coverage b/c of what Benigno said.

So he’s not allowed to do anything but rehab and wallow about not pitching for a year? The dude was at a basketball game. Benigno is a moron.

of course he’s allowed to do whatever he wants. he’s a public figure now, though, so whether he likes it or not he’s in the local sports conversation. He’s just kind of risking overexposure relative to his actual accomplishments – not his fault by any means, of course – but the fact remains. Regardless of its relationship to reality, stuff like this sends the message that Harvey is about fluff, when his (very deliberately) cultivated image so far is as this ultra-serious, maniacal competitor.

Just a personal taste thing, I feel like less is more with this.

Matt Harvey was the 2nd best pitcher in the NL last season before he got hurt. He was amazing, and it was his first full year. The guy is good looking, he’s got a Hot girlfriend and he has Money.

Let him live his freaking life, who knows how long the fame will last.

I agree that some of Harvey’s self-promotion last season made me a bit uncomfortable sometimes. But here, he’s just at a sporting event like 18,000 other people were that night. He has a right to a life.
