Tonight marks the final game regular season game to ever be held Candlestick Park and the ceremonies to see the stadium off have already begun. ESPN has gone all out in the farewell broadcast for the stadium on Monday Night Football and that included some words from former Niners quarterback Steve Young.

Young isn’t afraid to show how sentimental he is about his old home and went above and beyond to try and hammer home just how special he thinks Candlestick is. On ESPN Monday Night Countdown, Young compared Candlestick Park to the hallowed grounds of Fenway Park in Boston.

It’s not a bad comparison as it’s clear that Young has strong feelings about his former homes stadium but to compare it to the most famous and historic of sports stadiums in America is a bit of a stretch. There has no doubt been some classic football moments to have occurred at Candlestick Park but you remember the plays and not the venue. Regular football fans can watch a replay of  ‘The Catch’ and not know where the play too place. Watch any of the old Boston Red Sox highlight and they become Fenway highlights as much as they are Red Sox highlights.

Perhaps it’s how much more a baseball stadium comes into play as opposed to a football stadium but comparing Candlestick to Fenway is a bit of a stretch, even if it’s undoubtedly a historic NFL landmark.
