Rod Marinelli, who is currently serving as the defensive line coach for the Dallas Cowboys, has been an NFL assistant since 1996. Marinelli got his start in the league with the Tampa Bay Buccaneesr and now it looks like he could be returning to Florida.

Despite initial reports that Leslie Frazier could join Lovie Smith on the Tampa Bay coaching staff, Pat Yasinskas of ESPN is reporting that Marinelli will be the Buccaneers defensive coordinator.

Yasinskas wrote:

The real question now is whether or not Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will release Marinelli from his current contract in Dallas that keeps him under contract through the 2014 season.

If Jones agrees to let Marinelli walk, then the road is paved for Marinelli to join his longtime friend in Tampa Bay.

Jones cannot stop Marinelli from leaving as this is a promotion from position coach to coordinator.

    • NYCowboysFan

You are wrong Jeff. It has to be a Head Coach position for him to leave.

      • Earl Robertson

That isn’t right you can leave as long as it is a promotion

        • Earl Robertson

If you are a DF cord or off cord then only way u can leave is it has to be a head coach

          • NYCowboysFan

            Exactly.

        • NYCowboysFan

It IS right. Look it up.

Jones should fire Kiffin and promote Marineli.

  • Old Frog

Time to fish or cut bait. Either offer Marinelli the DC position or lose him. Even then he might decide it’s better to work in Tampa than for JJ. Wouldn’t that be a surprise…

Surely we can do better than this guy. Does anybody forget that he presided over the Worst Defense in NFL history. Everybody associated with the 2013 debacle should of already been packed and out the door

  • JoeDaBeast

Why use his Chicago Bears picture, instead of his Dallas Cowboys photo?

    • David Kerr

The picture reminds people of his ties to Lovie Smith through Chicago.

  • rocklayer99

Keep him. Either promote or target Ray Horton!

    • David Kerr

Ray Horton would be great. I think the 4-3 had its year and failed. Time to go right back and actually use our players strengths.
