With Al Golden reportedly leaving the Miami Hurricanes for the Penn State Nittany Lions job after three seasons and a 22-15 record (13-11 in the ACC) and a 36-9 loss in the Russell Athletic Bowl to Louisville, the Canes may be looking to a former Miami head coach to take over, according to Marc James.

Update 4:50pm:

That’s all well and good to believe he will be the head coach at Miami, but that’s the comment he has until Golden meets with he and the Miami administration to formally move on to his alma mater.

Davis was the coach at Miami from 1995-2000 and a perfect 4-0 record in bowl games and laid the foundation for the 2001 team that did win the national title after the BCS robbed them of playing in the game the year before. Davis was one of the nation’s top recruiters during his time in Miami and later with the North Carolina Tar Heels.

He has been out of coaching since 2010 when North Carolina fired him amid NCAA violations that occurred during his watch. Who says you can’t go back home again though, right? He does have the backing of at least one former Miami great.

Greg Schiano was fired from Tampa Bay Buccaneers this season and was Davis’ defensive coordinator from 1999-2000 before taking the head coaching job at Rutgers. Schiano’s defenses at Miami were among the top in the nation and send a host of players to the NFL.

Rob Chudzinski was a three-year starter at tight end for Miami and played on the 1987 and 1989 teams that won the national championship. He later coached at Miami from 1994-2003 moving up form a grad assistant to tight ends coach to eventually the offensive coordinator.

He has been in the NFL ever since and like Schiano was fired from his head coaching position this offseason, Chudzinski was fired after one season with the Cleveland Browns.

Jed Fisch was Miami’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach form 2011-2012 before taking a job with the Jacksonville Jaguars to be their offensive coordinator in 2013.
