When the Washington Redskins fired Mike Shanahan in a move we all saw coming, it appeared their first move was another one we all some coming — the team reached out to CBS analyst Bill Cowher. But while two separate reports this weeks stated Cowher had met with the Washington Redskins and owner Daniel Snyder, the former Steelers coach flatly denied both reports on NFL Today on Sunday.

Cowher was asked about the rumors in a segment in which the NFL Today crew were discussion coaching changes and the current vacancies that still exist. Rather than dance around the question, Cowher knifed right into it, almost with a little venom, and stated he has never met with Daniel Snyder and doesn’t plan on doing so.

The usual statement of flattery was given, but Cowher remained adamant that he’s not going anywhere other than a CBS studio next year. Washington either lied about meeting with Cowher, the reports were fabricated or Cowher is just trying to kill the rumors now by saying he’s never met with the team. Imagine the floodgates that would open if Cowher had said he met with the Redskins, even if it was to reject their offer, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Cowher did meet with the Redskins and is lying about it.

But one thing is certain, Cowher is not returning to coaching now and he might never do so again. Washington will have to keep looking and given their situation this season and this offseason, they were shooting for the moon in asking someone like Cowher to bail them out.
