Houston Texans trade for Ryan Mallett? Gil Brandt can see it happening

The Houston Texans have the top pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, so most assume they will pick a quarterback with that pick.  Gil Brandt throws out a scenario where they go a different direction.  The Texans trade for Ryan Mallett, backup quarterback for the New England Patriots and go a different direction in the draft.

New Texans head coach Bill O’Brien has worked with Mallett during his time with the Patriots.  The Texans have said they are open to listening to offers for the #1 pick in the draft, presumably hoping a team like the Cleveland Browns or Tampa Bay Buccaneers would give up a fortune to move up and pick a quarterback.  Connecting all of those dots, the Texans would trade for Mallett, trade down in the draft and address different issues, potentially drafting someone like Jadeveon Clowney from South Carolina to pair with J.J. Watt.  The Texans likely draft another quarterback somewhere later in the draft.

This seems like a pretty far fetched scenario, but stranger things have happened.

Pats should ask the Texans for their second pick (33rd). I would trade him in a heart beat. He will be leaving shortly anyway…..might as well get the max for him now.

I didn’t even read the article, but not Mallet (Shaun 0.2)

  • Matthew Sullivan

Will never happen. Bill O’Brien knows how bad Mallet is and will not offer anything more than a 7th round draft pick.

Agreed! Mallets fine where he’s at…Who started this dumb rumor? Why in gods green earth would the Texans even waste a thought on Mallet? Texans need O Line that can block for 4 quarters, WR that can get open catch the ball and have energy in the 2nd half, and a RB that doesn’t have 4 broken ribs or a broken back…That would be a good Start! I have a list of guys that can get at great value, but I’d just be wasting my key stokes cause there going to pick who they want…Only going to say one go get Patrick Edwards already…

Mallett is going to start in the NFL somewhere in the near future. And, he’s got an arm like a cannon, plus foot speed. I don’t see Mallet waiting for Brady to retire here. The Pat’s need a lot of picks more than a high draft pick in 2014. Offensive lineman are needed badly. A starting center is first on the list with another guard a close second. Neither requires a first round pick Then there is the issue of how much longer will the 36 year old Brady play? two years sounds about right. The QB of the future has to be a consideration in N.E. soon. It’s not like the Pat’s to gamble away the future to get one great player.

Mallett has incredible talent that is being wasted in NE right now and Texans would do very well to get before someone else does. He’s been mentored by the best and has extreme accuracy and strength. Not sure Texans are smart enough to make that move.
