Do you remember the bolo tie San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was rocking during the press conference after last weekend’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals? Of course you do. That thing was, well, I guess depending on your stance on bolo ties you could say it was any of a series of adjectives, but I’m personally going to go with awesome.

Anyway, what’s important isn’t if the bolo tie was great or a sartorial misstep. What’s important is that it was handmade gift from a 76-year-old fan named Ted Williams.

Chargers.com has the story:

"‘I made it myself about 10 or 15 years ago,’ said Williams.  ‘I saw that he had bolo ties on when they beat the Chiefs and beat the Broncos, so I figured he liked them.  I thought he might like that one.  It was always too big for me but he is a bigger guy so I thought it might fit him!’ So what was his reaction when he saw Rivers wearing it? ‘I thought it was great!’ said Williams.  ‘The guy that went down there with me is an ex-cop from LA, and he called me up when I was doing yard work and said it was on TV.  I asked ‘What’s on TV?’ and he said ‘Your bolo tie!’  So I went running in and rewound it because it was halftime of the 49ers game, so I saw it and it tickled the heck out of me.  I liked it a lot.’"

No matter your stance on bolo ties, you have to admit Rivers wearing it to a press conference was a nice gesture.
