On Thursday morning, reports surfaced that the New York Jets and head coach Rex Ryan had agreed to a multi-year extension. Very few details about the extension were released, but it appeared on the surface that Ryan was guaranteed at least a few more years with the team.

That may not be the case.

According to Brian Costello of theNew York Post, the Jets will be able to opt out of Ryan’s new deal without much difficulty after the 2015 season.

Costello states that Ryan’s salary after 2015 is not guaranteed, so the Jets would be able to buy the coach’s contract out with relative ease if they decide that it is best to go in a different direction at that time.

The good news for Ryan is that he will still have at least two more opportunities to show he is deserving of a bigger deal and that he is the man for the job. However, if he fails to show more signs of improvement over the next two seasons he could easily be looking for a brand new gig.
