Sochi Olympics 2014: Mexican skier to wear Mariachi uniform

Mexican alpine skier Hubertus von Hohenlohe will be celebrating the Mexican culture when he hits the slopes in Sochi, Russia for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Hohenlohe has become known for his extravagant suits, but his latest uniform may be the best to date.

When the 55-year-old Hohenlohe hits the course for his sixth Olympics, he will be rocking a mariachi themed outfit that is designed by Kappa. The suit will feature the traditional red tie and cummerbund, along with a faux tuxedo shirt and bolero jacket.

“This year’s suit is going to be more Mexican and very elegant, celebrating Mexican culture. It was very important for me this time to celebrate Mexican culture. Until I went to Mexico recently to make a documentary, I never realized what a beautiful, amazing, rich past and culture they have and what a proud people they are,” Hohenlohe, who is also of German descent, told the official Olympics website.

“It actually moved me to see how much they suffered and how much they fought for what they have. The power to have your own identity is so strong and something I believe in so I want to give it a go in a very cool, elegant way. I want to celebrate who they are, but of course in my own style.”

With the flamboyant suit, Hohenlohe, who joked that he could be called “the Mariachi Olympic Prince,” will certainly be one of the standouts of the Sochi Games.

Of course, Hohenlohe has almost no chance of winning a medal when he competes in Sochi, but at least he will look damn good trying — and that is all that matters, right?

No matter what the podium looks like after his event, Hohenlohe will come away as the people’s champion. At the very least, he has officially become my favorite 2014 Olympian.
