The San Francisco 49ers are not heading back to the Super Bowl this year thanks to a Colin Kapernick interception, but they almost won the big game last year had he converted a last minute drive into a game winning touchdown. Kaepernick’s final throw of Super Bowl XLVII was tipped away by the Ravens defense, but the quarterback says had his head coach not called a timeout just moments before, he may have been able to win the game.
Kaepernick told the story on Bill Simmons latest podcast and recalled that he had the Ravens number only to have things thrown off by poor clock management.
“There was one play we had that we had called a timeout on that I think would have walked in, and the play clock was running down so we called a timeout … It would have been close, but I think we might have been able to get that play off,”
The Niners quarterback is hardly throwing Harbaugh under the bus, but it’s not hard to interpret his quotes that way. There’s no saying what could have happened had a timeout not been called, but it’s clear that the 49ers quarterback is still haunted by not winning Super Bowl XLVII despite coming so close.
