After a fantastic national anthem from opera singer Renee Fleming, it was Joe Namath’s turn to head out onto the field for his moment of glory for Super Bowl XLVIII.

Unfortunately for Namath, he got the big game off on the wrong foot thanks to a botched coin toss.

As soon as head referee Terry McAulay explained the two sides of the coin, Namath was handed the little piece of silver for the ceremonial coin toss. That is when Namath got a little eager.

Instead of allowing the Seahawks captain to call the toss, he decided to toss the coin straight up into the air before anyone was ready.

Thankfully, McAulay was right there and ready to make a sweet grab to save the coin toss from being a completely epic failure.
