Boston Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes became a Boston hero last season.

Not only did Gomes’ beard (and first basemen Mike Napoli’s, of course) become the center of attention in Boston, but it became what the Red Sox, who won their third World Series in a decade in 2013, were known for throughout the season.

Well, Gomes has sadly trimmed his beard, but he has added something else to his body that might top any beard he could possibly grow.

Gomes, who was used mostly as a backup in 2013, batted .247, had an on-base percentage of .344 and slugged .426. He hit 13 home runs and drove in 52 runs.

In the postseason, he hit just .167, but hit a huge 3-run home run in the Red Sox’s 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in game 4 of the World Series. The Red Sox were trailing 2-1 entering the game and his home run helped turned the series around.
