There have been few athletes in Chicago sports history who have universally captured the attention of fans across the board like Devin Hester. No matter who you were rooting for in Chicago the last decade, Hester’s name was one that you knew as there hasn’t been a return man quite like him before.

Hester’s days in Chicago will be remembered forever, but they seem to be over for now. According to NFL scribe Dan Pompeii, the Bears are unlikely to bring back the 31-year old returner for another season.

"Last season Hester was exclusively a return man, and some teams prefer not to allocate a big chunk of the salary cap to a player who does not contribute to offense or defense. Given all the needs the Bears have, it is likely they will look for a return man who also plays offense or defense."

The Bears have benefited greatly from having Hester as not only a player but as a public figure as well, but the relationship seems over. While Devin Hester may never have to buy a drink in Chicago for the rest of his life, he’s not likely going to be playing anymore football inside Solder Field in a Bears uniform.
