NFL Rumors: Indianapolis Colts not expected to be big spenders in free agency

The Indianapolis Colts are at sam that has already started to home grow its own stars. While other teams have made it big by being splashy in free agency, the Colts have been building through the draft and haven’t really be active in the free agent market.

While this has freed up roughly $30 million in cap space this offseason, the team isn’t going to change its ways and be buyers. According to Mike Wells from, the Colts are going to be looking at future contracts for the stars they’re home growing rather than going nuts on free agents this offseason.

The Colts will have more than $30 million of salary-cap space in free agency, but don’t expect them to be like a kid with their Christmas money at Toys “R” Us and just spend away. Grigson knows they’ll have to pay players like Luck and receiver T.Y. Hilton at some point down the road. They’ll be smart with their money during free agency.

Basically, the nature of the Colts spending habits are both a blessing and a curse. While the team has a load of cap space to work with, they’re going to have to eventually pay their own free agents big money which means the spending won’t happen for another few years.

I agree the Colts won’t go after big name players with big dollar contracts but let’s not forget they do need cornerback opposite side of vontae Davis presuming he signs. Toler was injury prone before he arrived to Indy and stayed right on course this year. It was painfully clear that when Vontae is paired with Butler/Vaughn big plays were given up given the fact Landry is not a pure pass defending safety and Bethea has ability but is also more of a run defending fs. So unless Grigson pulls a rabbit out of his hat in the draft with a SOLID cb to compliment Davis hes going to have to make a wise signing at that position. Wr we are fine and have great depth at and if D.brown returns then our backfield is set(Ballard, brown, and please ppl T Rich still has promise). So I agree only because we really only need help at d/o line, linebacker, and another SOLID cb. Now this obviously could all go down the toilet if players like Bethea, Davis, and Brown all take their talent elsewhere. Good article though buddy, keep them coming!
