As the 2014 NFL league year will begin on March 11th most will have their calendars marked for the draft in early May. Quarterbacks are always looked at first in my opinion as this league has been transitioned into a passing league but what about the guys who catch those passes? A guy that many will say is the best of the receiver class is Sammy Watkins but is he?

Playing his college ball at Clemson Sammy sure has that playmaking ability teams will be looking for. His explosiveness and the way he plays the game could cause a lot of problems for opposing defenses. Looking at everything he could do I wonder if that will carry over to the NFL.

I have seen Watkins as high as number one overall in mock drafts but also as low as the teen’s. Everyone seems to think his game will be NFL ready but some things may keep him from being that total dominate player.

When you think of a number one receiver in this league these days a tall receiver that has the strength and that go get it ability to give their quarterback that security blanket is something that he may have. At 6’1” he lacks size but makes it up in other areas where it makes him a thorn in the side of whatever defense he’s going against. Good hands, footwork and vision of the game makes him a threat every time he’s on the field. Also throw in his speed and I think he could eventually turn into a potential number receiver on a team within a few years.

Some things he needs to work on are his build and awareness. Bulking up some wouldn’t hurt his game as he has problems sometimes getting off blocks and breaking tackles. Also many say he tends to always be watching around and is “afraid of the footsteps” you could say but there’s a lot of guys that tend to have that problem.

Some guys that are projected to go in the first round along with Watkins and may be selected before him are: Mike Evans, Marqise Lee, Kelvin Benjamin, Odell Beckham and also Jordan Matthews. A lot of these players have the skill to play in the NFL but may lack in certain areas to keep them a little below Sammy. One thing I will want to see is if any team would rather have the height and develop a guy or have a guy that may only be able to play the slot.

This draft will be interesting but I will be watching to see where Sammy Watkins ends up. Do you think he’s the best or will someone be better fit for an organization?
