The window for NFL teams to use the franchise tag on a pending free agent began on Monday, and the biggest name to watch will be tight end Jimmy Graham. The New Orleans Saints are fully expected to use the tag on Graham to prevent him from hitting the open market, but a stand off could be looming.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Graham will be filing a grievance with the league if he’s not tagged as a wide receiver.

Graham will be seeking out the wide receiver tender so he can receive an extra four to five million dollars.

Here is a look at the projected franchise tag numbers for wide receivers and tight ends this year:

  • Wide Receiver: $11,539,000
  • Tight End: $6,709,000

Graham frequently lines up split out in the Saints offense and he has been the team’s top receiving option over the past two seasons.

He will have a very good argument if he is looking to receive the wide receiver tag number, so we will have to keep an eye out on how the Saints will respond.
