The Atlanta Hawks signed big man Gustavo Ayon away from the Milwaukee Bucks in the offseason to provide some much needed depth.

However, Ayon injured his shoulder in the preseason and it has bothered him throughout the season, limiting him to just 26 games.

Finally, it was revealed that Ayon would need surgery and his season is over.

The Hawks officially announced Ayon’s surgery via Hawks.com on Friday.

"Hawks forward/center Gustavo Ayon had surgery today to repair a right shoulder injury. The surgery was performed at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta by Dr. Xavier Duralde and accompanied by Hawks Team Physician Dr. Michael Bernot from the Peachtree Orthopaedic Clinic.Ayon will now undergo a period of rest, treatment and rehabilitation. He will be out through the remainder of the season."

The injury is especially concerning to the Hawks. They have already lost their best player, power forward Al Horford, for the season and have struggled while Pero Antic and Paul Millsap have missed time due to injuries of their own.

Ayon finishes the season averaging 4.3 points and 4.8 rebounds in 16.5 minutes per game.
