NFL rumors: Rams expected to release Harvey Dahl in the ‘very near future’

The St. Louis Rams were informed on Saturday night that offensive tackle Rodger Saffold would not be returning to the team in 2014, but they are also expected to lose another offensive lineman very shortly.

According to ESPN Rams reporter Nick Wagoner, the Rams are expected to release offensive guard Harvey Dahl in the “very near future.”

By releasing Dahl, the Rams would have a total of $15 million in salary cap space available, so they would be able to make some moves in free agency and work on improving the weaknesses on their roster.

St. Louis already has one of the worst offensive line situations in all of the NFL, so they would be wise to focus on adding talent early and often in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Luckily for the Rams, they own two first-round picks.

    Is this 2010?

The Rams will be returning both of their starting offensive tackles, both of which graded out in the Top 25 last season, according to Pro Football Focus. They’ll also have Barrett Jones, their 2013 4th rounder who was held out last year recoving after recoving from offseason surgery. Assuming they re-sign either Shelley Smith or Chris Wiliams, the Rams will be returning four of five starters on a team that ranked among the top in the NFL in pass blocking efficiency and nearly plowed the way for a 1,000 rusher in only 12 games

…and that is before free agency and the NFL Draft.

Not sure how that is “one of the worst in all of the NFL”

Oh yea… and Harvey Dahl and Rodger Saffold play the same position for the St. Louis Rams. So, the Rams lost one starter and one backup… and in exchange, gained $4M in cap space (with no dead money) + didn’t have to waste $8.5M/year on Saffold.

So 3 of 5 staters are returning & SSmith
may not be?Perhaps I will wait.

Be happy; don’t worry! A BMW that breaks down all the time, isn’t worth having. I hate to think that we’ll lose Shelley Smith; good backup. But, losing Saffold will look good when he goes down sometime next season. In the meantime, let’s sign Geoff Schwartz. He would be an awesome addition to the team. Then, use the draft to fortify the line. Trade down, trade down, trade down! Draft Mike Evans wherever you have to, draft Zach Martin late in first or early second, and play him at guard in 2014. Groom him for tackle over the next couple years while we have Long. Then, start taking best players available.
