2014 NFL Free Agency: Donald Brown signs with the San Diego Chargers

The San Diego Chargers added depth at the running back position Tuesday night, signing former Indianapolis Colt Donald Brown.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com first reported the deal.

Pro Football Talk provides the details of the deal, which is in line with Toby Gerhart‘s new contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

That’s probably the first and last time that anything about Donald Brown will be described as Gerhart-esque, yea?

Brown was the steadiest member of the Colts’ backfield in the midst of a lot of change and turnover during the 2013 season that included a season-ending injury to Ahmad Bradshaw and a trade for Trent Richardson. Now he moves onto another crowded running back situation in San Diego, but one where he can realistically compete for carries with the likes of Ryan Mathews, Danny Woodhead and the ever-declining Ronnie Brown.

    TELESCO!!!! Great signing…

Not happy about today. We can now scratch off RB from our draft list. No De’Anthony Thomas
    -.-

    • Diegoblue

Why?? We still need speed ..

  • joerockt

Too funny. Was thinking of this pickup the other day. Now we can say goodbye to the other brown.

Not happy. We could get a cheaper and equally skilled rb in the draft. Does anyone feel like we are pick up all of the Colt’s castoffs?

    • Steve Valadez

What’s wrong with cast offs from Indy. Safe, solid move. We were exposed with Denver when we had no running game. Mathews is still a china doll. Woodhead is a 3rd down back. Ronnie is washed up. Defense is the priority for the draft.

      • Sean M

We should be picking up a NT before they are all gone. Right now the only descent ones left are Randy Starks and an ancient KevinWilliams. There isn’t a Star Lotuleli in this draft but there is several solid rb options that will be there in the later rounds. Seems like a waste of money to me.

        • Diegoblue

The NTs that were chosen already we couldn’t have afforded .. Not sure how much Cody will go for

        • BlueBoltFan

I’ve heard from a couple of analysts that NT is not a premier position in Pagano’s system since they tend to come out on 3rd down. While I was hoping Soliai would be available for us, we just need a reasonably priced 2-down space eater who can stack up against the run. Those guys are still out there.

Meanwhile, our offense fell flat when Mathews went out of the lineup in Denver.

          • Julien Bélair

if our NT was good maybe I would stay on third down haha

  • TheTrueBlu

He doesn’t fumble the football. That’s always a plus. And he should relieve Ryan of some carries. I like this signing.

    • Diegoblue

      Absolutely a good pick up

      • Julien Bélair

very good TT saw how much the running game affects us!

  • arnie

brown is a FA. I don’t expect him to return.

  • C.Steele

Really happy with this signing. Had Hoped for Gerhart, but Brown is good 1A.
