The Denver Broncos seemingly had one mission going into the NFL’s free agent frenzy – improve their secondary.

That they did as not only did the Broncos snag T.J. Ward away from the Cleveland Browns (among others) but they also brought in Aqib Talib, formerly of the New England Patriots.

But before they committed money towards Talib, the Broncos were apparently attempting to sign All-Pro safety Jairus Byrd who shockingly signed with the New Orleans Saints.

"#Broncos were interested in defensive playmakers all day yesterday. Before they landed Talib, they tried to get in on Jairus Byrd."

It’s tough to judge by Ian Rapoport’s tweet if he was suggesting that the Broncos would have opted to give money to both Ward and Byrd or if they would have signed Byrd over Ward.

From the way it’s worded, it sounds like the Broncos would have attempted to sign both Ward and Byrd and possibly went for a cheaper corner back.

Regardless, Byrd is now a member of the New Orleans Saints for the next six seasons but that certainly would have been one hell of a secondary tandem.
