As the trade deadline approached, it looked like the New York Knicks were set to part ways with guard Iman Shumpert.
Shumpert suffered through injuries and well out of favor in the Knicks’ rotation.
The Knicks had discussed possible trades with the Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder, but looked to have settled on the Los Angeles Clippers as his destination. Thanks to another Shumpert injury, among other things, there deal fell through.
On Tuesday, the Knicks will officially announce the hiring of Phil Jackson. That’s good news for Shumpert because according to a source of Marc Berman of The New York Post, Jackson is a “fan” of Shumpert.
“Iman is still part of this,’’ a league source familiar with the Knicks’ thinking told The Post.
Shumpert could be a perfect pupil of the triangle offense. It doesn’t hurt he grew up a big fan of Jackson’s Bulls in Oak Park, Ill.
“I love Phil Jackson,’’ Shumpert said. “Just being a child, seeing him, how he conducted the Bulls. I just love him.’’
Shumpert is averaging 6.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 26.4 minutes per game this season.
