If you were wondering why free gent kick return specialist Devin Hester is still a free agent, a pretty good reason may just just been stumbled upon. While he still seems to have something left in the tank, the former Bears returner apparently wants $4 million per season for his services — which is a pretty penny to pay a guy who’s on the field for what amounts to less than two minutes of actual game time.

Per ESPN.com:

"According to an NFL personnel evaluator whose team has discussed the possibility of going after Hester, the former Pro Bowl return specialist is currently seeking a deal in the $4-million-per-year range."

That’s not necessarily what you’d define as chump change, especially for a guy who’s hardly every actually on the field.

Hester’s blazing speed means he’s returning kicks faster than normal and he’s on the field even less. The seven points those kick returns produce are huge, but the question is are they worth $4 million per season, and more importantly are the ones he doesn’t return for touchdowns worth $4 million per season?
