The New York Jets have released quarterback and former fifth overall selection Mark Sanchez after attempts to trade him were unsuccessful.

This was a move that was expected for a long time after the team invested a second round pick in Geno Smith last season and with the team’s rumored interest in free agent quarterback Michael Vick. Further, Sanchez was due a $2 million dollar bonus if he was on the roster by Tuesday.

Update: Jets sign Michael Vick

It has been a disappointing fall from grace for Sanchez who led the team to the AFC Championship Game in his first two seasons with four road wins in those two postseasons, but since his career has been a relative laughingstock with his “butt fumble” being his claim to fame.

The Oakland Raiders were mentioned as a possible destination for Sanchez, but after they traded for Matt Schaub earlier on Friday it would appear unlikely he heads to the Raiders.
