It’s been years since New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan got a tattoo of his wife wearing a Mark Sanchez jersey, yet it’s still hard for me to wrap my head around.

I get showing your support for a player, especially your quarterback, but a tattoo? That’s permanent and Sanchez’s spot on the New York Jets roster? Not so permanent.

So what’s the head coach to do now that Sanchez will be playing elsewhere? He says he’ll modify it, possibly to honor Winston Hill.

"You remember, the tattoo in which Ryan’s wife is depicted wearing a Jets jersey with Sanchez’s number 6 on it. At the AFC coaches’ breakfast on Tuesday morning, Ryan rolled up his sleeve to show just a little bit of the design that he says will be staying with him . . . but perhaps with a modification.“The tattoo is still there,” Ryan said. “It was my tattoo, and it’s still my tattoo . . . I may alter it, who knows? I may put 75 on it and honor Winston Hill. I think that’s the idea. That’s what I’m going to do.”"

Sanchez was Ryan’s first draft pick and holds a sentimental place in the heart of the head coach, but hopefully this is the late time he gets a tattoo that ‘honors’ one of his current players.

For those that missed or never saw the ink…
