It came across as a surprise to some this week when top free-agent defensive end Jared Allen ended up signing with the Chicago Bears, who really were not one of the rumored top franchises to land his services. Well now we’re learning that the team had a bit of an assist in sealing the blockbuster deal from none other than the team’s leader himself, QB Jay Cutler, who restructured his contract so Allen could land in Chicago.

We’ve seen quarterbacks like Tom Brady do this in the past to help their team, and Cutler is the latest to follow suit.

This past offseason, Cutler and the Bears agreed to a seven-year deal, which has since been restructured so that Allen can chase down other NFC North quarterbacks, rather than Cutler himself like in recent years.
