The wild roller coaster ride that DeSean Jackson was just on after his release from the Philadelphia Eagles has no doubt humbled him but it’s also shown him just how ugly people can be for reasons you can’t help.

The biggest story about Jackson’s release from Philly wasn’t that a 27-year old Pro Bowl receiver was released in his prime, it was a likely bogus slam piece written about Jackson’s ties to gangland America. Judging from the outcry, you’d have thought he was Al Capone, Mickey Cohen and Bugsy Malone all rolled up into a pint sized NFL receiver.

To answer his detractors, Jackson posted a message on Instagram stating that you can’t judge a book by its cover.

It was brutally unfair to assume that Jackson was related to a gang when there had been nothing of this mentioned in his first six years in the NFL. Still, in the wake of Aaron Hernandez, teams can never be too careful and accused players like Jackson have only one way to vindicate themselves — just play ball and stay out of trouble.
