The Boston Red Sox aren’t even a week into the season and they’re already dealing with a rather significant injury as they’ve been forced to put third baseman Will Middlebrooks on the disabled list.

The powerful Middlebrooks struggled during portions of the 2013 season which saw him demoted to AAA, but as one of the premier young talents in the league, the Red Sox certainly weren’t going to give up on him – at least not that quickly.

Middlebrooks eventually made his return to the big league roster where he has remained since. Now though he’ll be sidelined for the foreseeable future as he’s dealing with a Grade 1 strain of his right calf.

"The Red Sox have placed third baseman Will Middlebrooks on the 15-day DL with a Grade 1 calf strain, manager John Farrell announced. They’ll be “missing a power right-handed bat who looked like he was getting off to a pretty darn good start,” said Farrell to Alex Speier of WEEI.com."

Brock Holt was called up from AAA and he figures to see some playing time while Middlebrooks recovers on the disabled list. It’s not known if Middlebrooks will be ready to return when his stint on the disabled list comes to an end.
