The Indianapolis Colts added wide receiver Hakeem Nicks during free agency, as they look to continue to add talent to their wide receiving corp in an effort to allow quarterback Andrew Luck to carve away at defenses all over the field.
Now that the team is preparing to begin offseason workouts, an interesting nugget surfaced regarding Nicks’ jersey number.
It isn’t huge news, but it is interesting.
Nicks wore No. 88 during his time with the New York Giants, but he will be wearing No. 14 with the Colts.
“Everybody knows I love those eights on my chest, but we’ll have to see how that pans out,” Nicks previously said.
Former Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison was the last man to wear No. 88 when he was Peyton Manning’s go-to receiver, and while his number is not retired the team would not allow Nicks to pick it.
Perhaps more notable than Harrison is Hall of Fame tight end John Mackey, who wore No. 88 when the team was in Baltimore. It appears that the team will eventually decide to hang No. 88 in the rafters, and hopefully both greats that wore the number will receive the recognition that they deserve.
