On Saturday night, boxing fans received a treat with an exciting championship triple-header on Showtime. In the second of three title fights, IBF welterweight champion Shawn “Showtime” Porter (23-0-1, 14 KO) puts his title on the line against two-time world champion Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi (33-5, 7 KO).

Porter had an impressive win in his last outing against Devon Alexander when he was able to secure the belt, but he has a tough test in front of him in the always dangerous Malignaggi, so it will be interesting to see if he can come away victorious and finally get the respect that many believe he deserves but has yet been able to find.

Malignaggi was in search of his third world title when he stepped into the ring.

Round 1: Malignaggi was looking to work the body early with some hooks and uppercuts while Porter was focused upstairs but Porter landed a quick double-jab that opened up a cut early. Malignaggi was allowing porter to come inside throughout the round and fire off his shots, which had Malignaggi down early on the scorecards.

Round 2: Malignaggi’s corner was concerned about elbows by Porter but told him not to worry about any dirty tactics. Porter was doing the better job at establishing the jab and working some dirty boxing inside of the clinch before landing a powerful shot that hurt Malignaggi and forced him to tie the fight back up. Malignaggi was running into trouble by staying straight up, and Porter landed a huge hook that jolted Malignaggi’s head and put him in serious danger. Porter jumped on Malignaggi looking to take advantage of his hurt opponent while Malignaggi eventually circled away and retreated until the bell rang. It was impressive that Malignaggi did not go down.

Round 3: Porter started off the third-round slow, but the champ found his groove midway through the round and landed a huge shot to the body. Porter continued to unload a flurry of powerful shots that hurt Malignaggi again, and led to another clinch. Malignaggi attempted to keep porter at a distance with the jab, but it wasn’t working out in his favor with the champion jumping in and landing huge hook after hook to stagger Malignaggi.

Round 4: Porter earned a knockdown early in the fourth and was in complete control with Malignaggi struggling to land anything of significance. Porter continued to pile on the damage and was able to land another devastating combination that made Malignaggi crumble to the mat and the referee jumped in to stop the fight.
