NBA Rumors: Los Angeles Lakers could target Fred Hoiberg or Tom Izzo as next head coach

The Los Angeles Lakers may very well be done with Mike D’Antoni as their head coach and firing him would be a move that the fan base would likely fully support. But firing D’Antoni is easier said that done as there are now already three teams looking for head coaches and only so many to go around.

With Steve Kerr likely headed to New York and Minnesota looking at George Karl or possibly hiring from within, the Lakers are looking at slim pickings on the coaching front and that makes firing D’Antoni a bout complicated.

According to Chuck Myron, a few names that could be considered are not only Stan and Jeff Van Gundy, but Michigan St. head coach Tom Izzo and Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg.

The idea of Hoiberg leaving Iowa State is a bit outrageous to consider, as he’s not willing to move north a few hundred miles to Minneapolis, so the idea of him moving west thousands of miles to Los Angeles is far fetched at best. But Izzo is a rock star head coach who could very well fit the Lakers and help give them a new identity.

But before any of this even matters, the Lakers need to fire D’Antoni and that hasn’t happened yet and may not happen at all.

    A new coach MUST have:
    1) Playoffs experience as a coach.
    2) Large Media Market Experience.
    3) Superstar Management Experience
    4) Player Development Experience

The team can’t afford to gamble with a college upstart, a retread looking for a new opportunity, or someone without the requisite experience.
    - Byron Scott or Stan van Gundy

    • Rebecca Lakerfan

Please NO VanGundy’s. Byron Scott would be my choice.

    • hookedonnews

Van Gundy has said he’s not coaching next season.

    • borsalino12

From all of your points here only the last one is important for the Lakers. We are not going to have a playoff runs in the next 2-3 years. We need a coach, who can work with young prospects and teach them to play D. Van Gandy’s brothers and B.Scott are losers. They all have had their chances to prove something in the NBA and failed miserably. They all got fired and are for about 7 years unemployed and working as a TV analysts. Think about. There is a reason why nobody wants to hire these losers.
Tom Izzo and Fred Hoiberg, as well as Quin Snyder are the best candidates from the new waive coaches. Lionel Hollins is the best one from the old schools.

  • Scott Gordon

There are plenty of coaching choices, all are better than Dantoni. Hollins, Shaw, Scott etc…..
The frustrating part is that Lakers FO hasn’t pulled the pin on MDA. Karl would not be a good fit in LA. The Lakers organization will not / can not move forward with MDA. The players, the fans, signing outside talent are all hampered by keeping this clown. The season ahead can be a success if the FO starts now. Make some decisions!!! Mitch is being too secretive. Everyone knows its time for Dantoni to go, make it happen Jim! You are making the Lakers into a joke. Dantoni only works with nobodys. Cant deal with the power players. Lakers are a power team. Guess what? Bye bye Mike!

I have been saying for a long time, Byron Scott as head guy, D. Fish, K. Rambus & Kareem as his asset’s,,,

    • nlruizjr

I would replace Rambis with M. Cooper, Cooper knows defense and offense, I believe he took the Sparks to a WNBA Championship (not certain tho), whereas Rambis has failed where ever he has gone, good guy just can’t coach (but better than MD)

      • Marty Susman

Ah, sorry to say this BUT Kurt’s wife, Jeanie Buss & Mitch’s wife are VERY close buddies :)

        • nlruizjr

Marty, what does that have to do with the Lakers coaching selection…….Nothing !!!!!

          • Marty Susman

Ah it means Rambus is not going anywhere away from the Lakers…

          • nlruizjr

What, is there a ticket agent position opening up, ha, ha, ha !!!!

  • Rod Roberts

this article is such bullshit. The Lakers are not hiring a college coach. B/R is fkn a digital fishwrap at best.

IF this team does not fire D’Antonio it will be a PR nightmare that may take years to overcome. Not only has he lost the veterans on the team, but he has alienated the fan base. When “Flea” a die hard Laker fan calls for the coach’s head you know you have lost the fans. Firing MDA and hiring someone like Izzo will make the heartbreak that was this last season dissipate quickly. Lets hope that Jimmy Buss has some touch with reality and makes this move.

    • hookedonnews

News flash–fans do not dictate decisions by the FO. If they did, PJ would have been hired instead of D’Antoni. Just a cursory reading of the comments of fans will tell you they are not qualified to make those decisions. I include myself in that. That’s a job for professionals who you have to assume have more information than the average fan. Izzo couldn’t even win the NCAA championship. What makes you think he’s qualified to take on the best job in the NBA? There is no chance he would be hired to replace MDA. There are very few college coaches who would be offered a coaching job in the NBA.

  • hookedonnews

Seriously? I have a better shot at that job (if one opens up) than those guys.

  • Rob

This guy obviously knows nothing about the Lakers or basketball. The FO would never hire JVG or SVG. Neither would they hire a college coach who had never won a championship. Byron is the right choice here. As far as college coaches, it’s coach K or nothing. What a lame article. And all you boneheads that think MDA might stay around. ……… get a clue. They are going to let him go. They are just being smart and finding their guy first. One more thing…… JERRY BUSS GAVE THE NOD FOR DANTONI, NOT JIM!!!!!!!

    • nlruizjr

      • Rob

First of all, Jim Buss came out and said Jerry told him to move fast and pick up Dantoni. That is not hearsay. I am not sure what you are looking for. A taped private conversation between Jim and his dad? If the man said that is what happened then I have no reason to believe he is lying. Him saying that changed nothing. It wasn’t as if people had given Jim a fair shake before that. I think for the most part people that just assume others are lying are usually liars themselves. My one pass on that would be politicians. I think it is safe to assume they lie continually.

        • nlruizjr

and I suppose you were there when Jerry told Jim, no one knows what was said except the Buss family, I suppose that is why Jeanie Buss was so upset and surprised when she heard the news, strange if she would have heard that while her dad told everyone as you say, why was she surprised and upset at her brother Jim and Mitch and I quote, “She felt betrayed” from her own mouth, yes I lean towards what you are spouting is pure hearsay but you are right about one thing, Republicans are a bunch of liars !!!!!

  • Eazy

How about NO and NO… stop with the coaches that have never won at a high level in the Pro’s.

  • borsalino12

I have read some really good posts here as the one of Scott Gordon.
Our FO should understand that if they don’t fire M.D’Antoni now, no quality free agent will sign with us. They have to hire a new coach by the end of this month and he has to choose our draft pic and the FA’s which he wants to be brought to L.A. These two University coaches are good choice. Atlanta’s Quin Snyder, who worked for the Lakers in 2012 under M.Brown is another good choice. Lionel Hollins is also a solid NBA coach with some real success in the NBA.Whoever the new coach is, he has to be hired by the end of this month, so he can get ready for the draft and free agency.Jimmy, wake up and get busy.
