The San Francisco 49ers have been one of the more consistent, successful teams in recent years, evidenced by the fact that they are on a current streak in which they’ve reached three straight NFL Championship Games.

Even with one Super Bowl appearance coming out of those title game trips, the team has not been able to claim that ultimate prize and bring the Lombardi Trophy back to San Francisco for the first time since Steve Young, Jerry Rice and company brought the hardware home in Super Bowl 29.

For 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, this is a problem and he believes that the success of just being one of the top teams in the NFC isn’t enough; this team needs to be the best in the NFL at some point.

“We must win a Super Bowl title,” Davis told ProFootballTalk on Tuesday. “You play this game, that’s what you play this game for. You play the game to go to the Super Bowl and that’s the only reason why we play to win and make it to the Super Bowl. So anything short of that would not be acceptable and I think my teammates know that as well.”

There’s no question, obviously, that this team has what it takes to get over that hump, it’s just a matter of putting it all together when it matters the most.
