In a bizarre twist of events, Michigan forward Mitch McGary has been suspended by the NCAA but will avoid that suspension by entering the NBA Draft this June. According to Yahoo! Sports’ Dan Wetzel, the Michigan forward failed an NCAA marijuana test and wouldn’t be able to resume his college career until the 2015-16 season.

To avoid having to sit out an entire year of basketball, the NCAA has forced McGary’s hand and he will join other underclassmen declaring for the draft.

Recently, McGary has been creeping into the first round of mock drafts as some of the better prospects ahead of him like Willie Cauley-Stein and Montrezl Harrell decide to return to their schools in 2014. But this is an issue that will no doubt red flag him as not only did he have an existing back problem that was cause for concern, he now has to answer for his year long ban for smoking marijuana.

There are worse things to be busted with and frankly teams may end up being more concerned about his back than his pot smoking habit. But there is still nothing to be proud of if you’re McGary as declaring for the NBA has gone from a happy choice to his only option.
