As the fallout from Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling’s racist comments continues to dominate headlines around the NBA, Sterling’s estranged wife, Shelly, has released a statement distancing herself and her family from the comments.

Shelly made it clear that her and her family are hurt by the comments Donald Sterling made, but they will continue to support the Clippers organization and hope that the comments don’t end up taking away from the success the team has had.

“Our family is devastated by the racist comments made by my estranged husband,” Shelly Sterling’s statement read, via TMZ.com. “My children and I do not share these despicable views or prejudices. We will not let one man’s small-mindedness poison the spirit of the fans and accomplishments of the team in the city we love.”

“We are doing everything in our power to stand by and support our Clippers team.”

It is disappointing to see such ignorant comments in today’s day and age, but one man’s ignorance should not derail everything that the players have worked so hard for.

This is Adam Silver’s first real test as the NBA commissioner, so hopefully he will come down with some swift punishment and find a way to strip Sterling of the franchise and allow the players to compete for somebody that appreciates the effort they put in and who they are as human beings.
