With the Houston Rockets trailing 102-97 after allowing the Portland Trail Blazers to go on a 14-3 run, they could see a game that they had control of throughout most of the night slipping away before their eyes.

However, the Rockets answered by scoring seven straight points of their own to regain the lead, largely because of the defense of Rockets’ center Dwight Howard, a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

After Howard was fouled twice and made three of four free throws, the lead was back down to two. Blazers’ point guard Damian Lillard drove to the basket and elevated for a layup, but Howard erased the shot, giving the Rockets’ possession. After Patrick Beverley missed a three-pointer, Nicolas Batum went to the rim, but Howard also sent that shot flying and the Rockets tied the game and then took the lead on four James Harden free throws.
