NFL Draft rumors: Oakland Raiders could trade down if Sammy Watkins is off the board

The Oakland Raiders, as they continue to try and bring the organization back to prominence, sit with the fifth overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft next week, and they certainly have options.

While those options are there, general manager Reggie McKenzie met with the media on Thursday and he may have more or less laid out the Raiders’ draft plans at number five.

If Sammy Watkins is gone, then let the trade down talk begin.

At one point in the presser, McKenzie further fueled the trade rumors by exclaiming that his “phone line is always open” on draft day.

That comment, though, was then followed by an exclamation of the team absolutely not passing up on a “great” wide receiver, and in this rather deep group, Watkins has been the only one looked at as en elite talent at the position.

Of course, it’s not that hard to put the pieces of that puzzle together. If say, for instance, the Rams take Watkins with the second overall pick, then the Raiders trade movement will be in full force.

Is there a chance this could be a smokescreen? Of course, however when have we ever known the Raiders to be anything less than bluntly honest?

Reggie McKenzie did a great job of being elusive in his press conference. They kept trying to sneak information with their questions and all of his answers given were very well-thought-out not give any insight into his actual thoughts. I think people are reading too much into that “example” of him taking a player as to pass for a player later of a much lesser caliber. I think that’s an obvious answer just about any smart GM would give, and “receiver” was just an example of that type of thinking. I’m pretty sure he didn’t just come out and say if Sammy Watkins is available at five then he’s mine, but at the same time just like most I would be ecstatic if they did draft him at five

I wouldn’t be suprised if Watkins was there and they select Evans

Ditto. I like Evans over Watkins to be honest. Evans has size, speed, and swagger. Although I hope we trade down. My dream scenario would be trading down and getting an extra second rounder. 1st- Hageman/Donald 2nd – kyle van noy 2nd- deone buchannon . just completely go all in on defense first 2 rounds. Then address offense in later rounds. Take a flyer on colt lyerla in the 6th. Dudes a freak talent with hall of fame potential. Also there are some decent olineman in the 3rd round -4th round. Maybe mettenberger or mccarron are there in the 3rd
