The St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs kicked off a three game weekend series today at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois.

There’s no doubt that the Cubs/Cardinals series is one of the most infamous rivalries in all of sports right next to the Yankees/Red Sox, Bears/Packers and the Lakers/Celtics. Sure the Cardinals have had more success than the Cubs have had, but faithful North Side fans continue to show up at either ballpark to show their support for their Cubbies.

Now Travis Wood took the mound today and looked fairly great. The man was only charged with two earned runs against the Cardinals (three runs), while giving up six hits.

Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright was tagged for six runs on 10 hits through five innings of work in the loss. Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo had himself a solid game today as he was able to pick up three of Chicago’s six runs on the day.

Anthony Rizzo picked up a two run single during the bottom of the first that ended Wainwright’s 25 scoreless inning streak. He launched a solo home run off Wainwright during the bottom of the fifth inning that would extend the Cubs lead to 6-3. Rizzo is currently hitting .295/.419/.495 with five home runs and 15 RBI’s under his belt to start off the young 2014 season.

Veteran shortstop Jhonny Peralta also had himself a solid game as he picked up an RBI double early on, then launched a two run home run during the top of the eighth.
