NBA Rumors: Toronto Raptors to pursue signing Vince Carter in free agency

The NBA hot stove isn’t really that hot yet but it’s starting to heat up as more and more teams are bounced from the postseason and the mindset of the league switches from trying to win a championship this year to trying to win on next year.

One team that nearly kept their miracle season going were the Dallas Mavericks, but already teams are looking at their pending free agents and licking their chops. Vince Carter, for instance, is set to become a free agent and the Toronto Raptors are already showing an interest in brining him back to where his career started.

Per Marc Stein:

Word is that the Raptors have been kicking around the idea of making a free-agent play this summer to try to bring Vince Carter “home” by trying to sign the former face of the franchise away from the Mavericks.

Carter made a name for himself in the late 90s and early 2000s as ‘Vince-sanity’ hit the NBA hard while Carter was flying high with the Raptors. Going back tot he team, especially now that they’re starting to become contenders, would bring Carter’s career full circle and may be an attractive location for him.

A lot of time lies between now and when the Raptors can legally start making a move on Carter, but its’ going to be a free agent storyline to watch.

Josh, lets get real, a Starting SF would be appropriate, let TR become your sixth man for energy. Trevor Ariza on a 3yr 11 million a year contract. Raptors can afford it . Pay Lowry same amount as Stef Curry. 4 years 42 -44 million. Salary for Lowry is made up by dropping Salmons, reduction in attribution for Camby and the savings on Bucyks and Stone. Pay your 2nd Round Picks 450,000 1st year entry fee. If they see court time great it will be in Las Vegas.
If you keep Psycho great, he is a 5th man in the forward rotation by Casey’s standards. Overpaid at 3.3 million dollars, can save 2.3 million if you release him. De Colo is 1.8 million dollars, for a 3rd Guard, probably wait to after draft to determine if you keep him. If you pick in 2nd Round Russ Smith, you save more monies.
Finally, if you do all of the above, include your 1st Round pick and 2nd Round Pick , match for PP and Vasquez, you have spent 60 million dollars on salary cap and you have 13 players. You have 16 million dollars to spend before you hit the luxury tax. Backup Center (Spencer Hawes? or Anderson Varajeo) and a Starting SF.
If you are cheap go for Francissco Garcia to be your back up 2/3.
Remember next year you get rid of Chuck Hayes, Landry Fields salaries which total 12 million dollars.
