The Kansas City Chiefs spent a second round draft pick on a quarterback last season when they traded for Alex Smith but they may be spending a high pick on a quarterback again this season. According to Ian Rapoport from NFL Network, contract negotiations with Smith aren’t going well in Kansas City and the team is starting to consider drafting his replacement on the first or second day.

We’ve heard the Chiefs mentioned with quarterbacks in the past but not like this where Smith’s contract has been cited as a reason for interest. With names like Zach Mettenberger, A.J. McCarron and others that Andy Reid would love to get his hands on, the possibility of the Chiefs drafting a quarterback to replace Smith if negotiations prove fruitless is starting to sound more and more like reality.
