Following UFC Fight Night 40, flyweight Chris Cariaso was hoping that his win over Louis Smolka would allow him to take the next step up in competition. Cariaso said at the post-fight press conference that he was hoping his next bout would be against a contender ranked in the top five at 125-pounds, and the latest rankings could give him that opportunity.

Cariaso moved up two spots to No. 8 in the updated UFC Fighter Rankings, which will set him up for the toughest test of his career in his next bout.

Fellow UFC Fight Night 40 participant Kyoji Horiguchi is also now on the rankings list.

The updated flyweight rankings can be seen below:

Champion: Demetrious Johnson
1. John Dodson
2. Joseph Benavidez
3. Ian McCall
4. Ali Bagautinov +1
5. John Moraga -1
6. Jussier Formiga
7. John Lineker
8. Chris Cariaso +2
9. Zach Makovsky
10. Timothy Elliot -2
11. Brad Pickett
12. Louis Gaudinot
13. Dustin Ortiz
14. Kyoji Horiguchi NR
15. Scott Jorgensen -1

Cariaso specifically pointed out the winner of Ian McCall vs. Brad Pickett, which takes place in Ireland this July, for his next fight and that would certainly create an interesting match up that could have title implications in a division where champion Demetrious Johnson has already defeated many of the top contenders.
