This is a strange little addition to the whole Michael Sam story, one that doesn’t really mean anything per se but does give another dash of spice to the whole narrative.

According to a report from the New York Daily News, the boyfriend Michael Sam was famously seen kissing the night of the draft has a pretty interesting family tree. Trace back a couple generations, and you find that Vito Cammisano’s grandfather was an infamous Kansas City mafia boss.

Per the Daily News, Cammisano’s grandfather was a real insane piece of work named William “Willie the Rat” Cammisano. That nickname, by the way, did not come from William ratting people out, it came from his habit of getting rid of bodies by dropping them into the sewer to be eaten by rats.

Willie was active in the Kansas City mafia right up until his death in 1995. Vito’s father Jerry also has a criminal background, having served prison time for a gambling conviction, but he never made it all the way to boss like Willie.

Now of course none of these pieces of sordid family history should be held against Vito. Sam’s boyfriend has no criminal record and is by all accounts a clean-cut fellow. Sons shouldn’t have to pay for the sins of their fathers.

Or their mob boss grandfathers who used to feed the bodies of murder victims to sewer rats.
