Former NFL quarterback and NBC Sports commentator Shaun King has come out against Michael Sam having his own reality show after the Oprah Winfrey Network revealed on Wednesday that they purchased rights to a documentary series featuring the St. Louis Rams seventh round pick and the first openly gay NFL draft pick.

According to a TMZ report, King supports Sam and is proud of him for coming out, but thinks part of the reason why he slipped to the end of the seventh round is because teams got wind of the reality show, cameras were rolling prior to the NFL Draft, and teams are afraid of the distraction it will bring and they want to avoid a “media circus.”

“After what happened with Tebow, the last thing an NFL team wants is a media circus. They just want to go about their business and focus on winning.”

“I had him pegged as a 5th round guy. I think the reason he dropped is because teams are afraid [of things like the reality show].”

King added, “I’m happy he got drafted. I support Michael Sam … but I think the reality show is a mistake.”

You may remember former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron was widely-criticized for his fiancee Katherine Webb trying to have a reality show to document their wedding and the planning leading up to the event.

Do you think there should be similar criticisms attached to Sam and his reality show, and do you think it will be a media circus and a mistake for Sam to follow through with the show like King thinks?
